Favorite, Italian Jonathan Milan won the sprint during the 2nd stage of Tirreno-Adriatico. A step that saw David Gaudu fall again and abandon, hit in the right elbow. Filippo Ganna, winner of the time trial on Monday, retains the leading blue jersey.
After the traditional time trial of Lido di Camaiore at the opening (won, as often, by Filippo Ganna), the 2nd stage of Tirreno-Adriatico offered another traditional arrival, in Follonica by the sea. A massive sprint was expected, and it actually took place. It was Jonathan Milan, a favorite of this stage, which has established itself, with a good lead on the competition. Perfectly led by Lidl-Trek’s train, and in particular his compatriot Sinome Constoni, the Italian won in force, on the right side of the road, in front of the Dutch Maikel Zijlaard and the French Paul Penhoët. Milan won the 20th victory of his career, the fourth this season after his successes on the tour of the Valencia community and the UAE Tour.
Filippo Ganna keeps the leading blue jersey. If Milan lived a beautiful day, it was however a nightmare for David Gaudu. Already the victim of a fall in training on February 20 because of a cat, then two falls last Saturday on the Strade Bianche, the leader of Groupama-FDJ had still taken the start of this Tirreno-Adriatico, finishing 67th of the time trial on Monday. But this Tuesday, he dropped again, 39 kilometers from the arrival at the time of supplies, notably with Valentin Madouas and Pepijn Reinderink. The other two were able to leave, but Gaudu, hit in the right elbow, got up fairly quickly, before going to sit in a grass, suffering ditch. He finally abandoned the race a few moments later. What a frustration for the Frenchman, who had finished third in Oman’s Tour by winning a stage but has been on the galleys since.
The Italians animated the race
There was no suspense to name the combative of this stage. From the 4th kilometer, Manuele Tarozzi (VF Group – Bardiani CSF – Faizane) escaped, and no one wanted to accompany him. The 26-year-old Italian counted up to 5’30 ahead, despite the big work of Lidl-Trek and Visma-Lease A Bike, and spent 110 kilometers alone in mind. But the race then animated when two of his compatriots, Alessandro Tonelli and Davide Bais, both members of the Polti Visitmalta team, left the peloton in their turn, while Tarozzi was only 53 seconds in advance.
The duo quickly joined the lonely runner. Bais went to take the points in the mountain ranking at the top of the only difficulty of the day, and the trio resumed more than a minute ahead. The three men were finally joined by the peloton 38 kilometers from the finish, just after the fall which caused the abandonment of David Gaudu. Wednesday, the 3rd stage will lead the runners from Follonica to Colfiorito, in central Italy, for 239 hilly kilometers.
