Monaco made short work of ASVEL this Wednesday during the 12th day of the Euroleague this Wednesday (84-52).
After an interesting start to the season in the Euroleague, AS Monaco was weighed down by two defeats in Belgrade last week (78-76 at Partizan and 91-79 at Red Star). Having fallen to 9th place in the ranking, the Roca Team was to recover this Wednesday evening during a 100% French shock in the ASVEL arena. Last in the standings, the Lyon club remained on a first valuable European success against Partizan Belgrade last Friday and hoped to ride this wave.
But the match between the two Betclic Élite teams did not last very long on the floor of the LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu. While they had already won against ASVEL in the championship this season (102-98), the Monegasques this time had an almost peaceful meeting in the Lyon suburbs. The fault lies with a skill at half mast on the ASVEL side, with an 8/37 shooting at the break, including a humiliating 0/13 from distance. We even had to wait until the end of the third quarter to see Pierric Poupet’s team score their first winning shot, through Thomas Heurtel.
Eight months after his last match, the French international made his comeback with the ASVEL jersey, having already played in Villeurbanne for six months at the end of the 2020-2021 season. But with seven points scored, Heurtel could not allow his team to secure a second victory in the competition. Yet hardly brilliant, Mike James’ teammates (12 points) were able to take advantage of the opposing team’s shortcomings (23 lost balls, 2/25 at 3 points) to win quite comfortably (84-52), signing the biggest gap in its history in the Euroleague (32 points) without much success however (6/25 by far).
