To fill Santa’s bag, toys are poured in by the thousands: rattles, dolls, construction games. On online sales platforms, you can find everything at unbeatable prices. But be careful, according to a study, out of 70 toys offered by online sellers, such as AliExpress, Temu or Shein, 86% are considered dangerous for children. Demonstration with a rattle, the bells of which can be easily torn off by a baby. “It can get stuck in his esophagus, and there can be a tragedy due to suffocation,” explains Christophe Drevet, director general of the French Federation of Toy and Childcare Industries.
Reportedly, the rattle sold on Shein has been removed, but it is still available on other sites. French manufacturers, who respect drastic standards, are demanding that the authorities put pressure on the platforms. “The first thing is to give greater responsibility to the platforms that host these sellers, sellers who are established outside the European Union, and who exempt themselves from all security rules.continues Christophe Drevet.
What do parents think, six weeks before Christmas? There is no question for those met by France Télévisions of slipping these gifts which could be poisoned under the tree. “I think it’s risky if we don’t take care to really see in detail the origin and the material, what it’s made of.”believes a woman. “I prefer to put a little more on the price, perhaps fewer gifts for the children, but in any case which will be of better quality”says a man.
In stores and on the Internet, it is better to turn to certified toys. To do this, just look at the labels. “So here we have a plush toy that meets all the standards. You have the CE logo, the supplier’s address and you also have the details which stipulate that it is a product suitable for babies”, shows François Fernand, the assistant manager of the La Grande Récré Beaugrenelle store.
In 2024, European manufacturers had already sounded the alarm. But online sales sites are always offering more references: 96% of toys do not meet standards.
