Movistar reacts to the Lazkano affair

After the provisional suspension of Oier Lazkano for “unexplained anomalies in his biological passport”, his former team, namely Movistar, spoke out on the subject.

While the 2025 cycling season has recently ended, a doping case has unfortunately been the talk of the discipline in recent days. Indeed, for “unexplained anomalies in his biological passport” between 2022 and 2024, i.e. when he played under the colors of Movistar, Oier Lazkano was suspended as a precautionary measure this Thursday by the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Linked to this affair, the Spanish team has since spoken out on the subject through Abarca Sports, the company which manages Movistar. “It is highly likely that a prohibited substance or method was used and it is unlikely that the passport results were due to any other cause. (…) It was only yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, October 30, 2025, that the team became aware of this situation,” we can read in particular in a press release. For its part, Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe has already announced that Lazkano will no longer be part of the team in the future, although he was under contract until 2026.

“During the three seasons of contractual relationship with Mr. Lazkano (out of the five to which the UCI study refers), all the controls to which he was subjected by the various national and international bodies, as well as those carried out internally by the team, proved negative. As a result, it was physically impossible to know, or even suspect, any anomaly such as that now mentioned in the procedure opened by the UCI,” Abarca Sports also clarified regarding the Spanish champion in 2023.

“Abarca Sports reiterates once again, with absolute firmness, its unwavering commitment to clean and transparent sport,” we can also read in the press release from the Spanish company. To this end, we will redouble, with the greatest determination, all the efforts, controls and measures implemented to date. » After having had interesting results with Movistar in the past, Lazkano has not raced since Paris-Roubaix (117th), last April…
