Soon, a little pink will circulate in the flow of automobiles. Today, when you buy a car, new or used, you may need a temporary registration plate while you complete the formalities. It then necessarily begins with “WW”. In 2026, be careful, the background will turn pink. “And then, there is a little extra detail: on the side there is a date. This will be the maximum validity date of the license plate. Which means that the police will immediately see pink, the validity date of the license plate and will therefore be able to know if the vehicle is in violation or not”explains Pierre Chasseray, spokesperson for the 40 million motorists association.
The objective: to fight against fraud. Because if definitive registrations are only used once, provisional “WW” registrations are regularly reassigned to other vehicles. Duplicates can then lead to errors. “If customer A always keeps his temporary plate and never changes it, in a few months, another customer will have the same plate, and all it takes is for customer A to speed, for example, and it will be customer B who will receive the fines”says Guillaume Klein, director of the Norauto Belle-Epine Center.
More visible, with clearer information, future plates will arrive on the roads from January 1st. Roses, because it is the only color that has never been used for registrations.
