Paris-Nice (E5): Martinez in force, French double

The peloton had an appointment this Thursday with the fifth stage of Paris-Nice between Saint-Just-en-Chevalet and La Côte-Saint-André (203.3 km). The French shone with a victory for Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious) and a second place for Clément Champoussin (XDS Astana).

What a finish for Lenny Martinez! Fourth the day before, the French of Team Bahrain Victorious won at the end of the Côte de Notre-Dame-de-Sciez. Well positioned in the four leading men on the last meters, the 21-year-old French followed the wheel of Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease A Bike). By launching his attack in the last 150 meters when the climb was almost over, Martinez finished alone to raise his arms on the finish line.

A victory and a double since his tricolor teammate Clément Champoussin (XDS Astana) took second place in front of Jorgenson. “It was very hard as a step, I was well positioned at the start, then I hung on. I am satisfied even if there are still a lot of steps, I will stay focused until the end. Commented the Astana runner. Martinez’s victory allows French to get closer to the leader, who changed this Thursday at Côte-Saint-André.

Vingegaard leaves the yellow jersey to Jorgenson

After changing teams, Lenny Martinez won a very good victory this Thursday during the Paris-Nice. He returns to fifth place (55 seconds) from the general dominated by Jorgenson. Indeed, the American resumes the place of leader to his teammate Visma-Lease A Bike. After falling at the start of the race in the Côte de Trier, Jonas Vingegaard hit in the lip did not manage to bounce back. The Danish cracked when the pace accelerated and finished 16th in the stage of the day. A step that saw two runners take the breakaway.

Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers) and Thibaud Gruel (Groupama-FDJ) were taken over 42 kilometers from the arrival by Tobias Foss (ineos grenadiers). Despite the narrowness of the road on the last ascent of the day, Martinez will have succeeded, well followed by Champoussin, who styled Jorgenson along the barriers inside. The suspense remains whole before the 210 km of the 6th stage between Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban and Berre l’Etang. The final victory will be played this weekend in the hinterland of Nice where everything remains open.
