Whatever your car insurance contract, in 2026, the price will increase by 4.5% on average, or almost 2 euros more per month for motorists. “It’s still too expensive, that’s what I can say. It’s increasing all the time”deplores a motorist. “I think it depends on the insurers. It depends on the quota they also have to increase us. But in any case, it’s not very pleasant”believes another. “We pay for people who are not insured or for all natural disasters. I think that these increases must be justified like that. In any case, we have no choice, we have to be insured”puts a man into perspective.
The reasons are multiple, such as damage linked to climatic events, and certain regions are more exposed than others. Consequence? Higher contributions in Corsica, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Île-de-France, and cheaper in Brittany, Pays-de-la-Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Added to this is the increasing cost of repairs and more serious accidents. As a result, auto insurance premiums have jumped by more than 25% in four years.
So, a few tips to lower the bill. Consolidate all your car, home and health insurance contracts with a single insurer. If you are driving an old car that is not worth more than 3,000 euros, there is no need to take out all-risk insurance, a third party may be enough. Also think about insurance per kilometer. If you drive less than 8,000 km per year, you can save 15% on your contract, and that’s not all.
“Go and see what price your insurer would offer if you were a new customer. There are certain insurers who charge an old customer almost twice as much as a new customer”underlines Cyrille Chartier-Kastler, founder of “Facts and Figures”. It’s up to everyone to do their own calculations to avoid suffering an increase sometimes considered too heavy.
