After having achieved one of the most successful careers in the history of tennis, Rafael Nadal has been enjoying his retirement for a little over a year now, having put away his racket for good in November 2024. Now 39 years old, the Spaniard, winner of 22 Grand Slam titles (including 14 times Roland-Garros) returned during a long interview for As on his end of career and his future.
“I was no longer in good shape. Fortunately, this chapter is definitely closed, and that’s a good thing. I’ve never been one to think, “If only I could…” My body has its limits, and I think my mind does too. There comes a point, when you have stopped a routine, that you can no longer resume it. It’s very difficult,” initially explained the “Bull of Manacor”, who was greatly hampered by injuries before saying stop.
Nadal: “It’s way too early to think about it”
Asked what he would like to do from now on, “Rafa” was clear on the subject. “Travel all the time? I don’t see it. Being a coach would mean that, and right now it’s not compatible with my life. Davis Cup captain one day? Why not ? I might have fun there… or not. I have just retired, it is far too early to think about it,” subsequently admitted the man who does not see himself getting involved in politics in the future.
“I trained two or three times with the girls, with Alina (Korneeva) and Alex (Eala), with no other intention than to have a good time playing, encouraging them and making them happy. That’s how I see it: without any interest or expectations,” also said Nadal, who was recently seen with a racket in his hand at his academy in Manacor. The idea of an exhibition tour with Roger Federer is still in the works.
