The Christmas bonus could be eliminated for households without children. The Minister of Labor justified it on Tuesday, November 4, explaining that the State could no longer be as generous as before. This bonus is paid to RSA recipients and unemployed people at the end of their rights.

No children, no Christmas bonus for the most precarious. Does the government want to exclude households without children from this end-of-year bonus next year? The idea worries a former soldier in the RSA, concerned, even though this help is very useful to him. “It’s like the 13th month for some people. For people who don’t have much income, having an end-of-month bonus is something relatively good”he explains.
This aid benefits RSA recipients and unemployed people at the end of their entitlement: 152 euros for a single person, 228 for a couple without children. Its removal may seem a little aggressive, recognizes the Minister of Labor and Solidarity, but it is necessary according to him. “There was a time of generosity in all social policies and that’s good. I think that now we have to be careful. I’m not sure that our country has the means to continue these policies of maximum generosity. We must therefore accept a refocusing, and that’s the debate”declares Jean-Pierre Farandou, Minister of Labor and Solidarity, on France Inter, Tuesday November 4.
But could this restrictive measure derail the budgetary debate? In the National Assembly, the left, from the rebels to the socialists, denounced an injustice. “We are still at the stage where the Macronist big bourgeoisie is going to pick the pockets of people who receive 150 euros of Christmas bonus. And the amount saved, we are talking about 200 million euros, it is the equivalent of seven days of wealth tax. It’s nothing at all”launches Hadrien Clouet, LFI deputy for Haute-Garonne. “We seek to have a fair budget for all French people. If, in the end, this is not the case, the government risks its own survival. Obviously, this type of measure cannot remain until the end of the budget vote”believes Jérome Guedj, PS deputy for Essonne.
And even within the Macronists, some are warning. “Be careful, it’s not just a symbol. The budget is not just an accounting exercise, it’s also a political direction to take”indicates Prisca Thevenot, Ensemble MP for the Republic of Hauts-de-Seine. The minister says he is open to debate if and only if the balance of Social Security accounts is ensured.
