Three NBA games were on the night’s schedule, with only one Frenchman, Zaccharie Risacher, contributing to Atlanta’s victory at Utah. Another away success, that of Toronto in Cleveland. Finally, Phoenix crushed the very weak Indiana Pacers.
Atlanta doesn’t stop! After an average start to the season, the Hawks (5th in the East) scored a fourth victory in a row (still without their star Trae Young), on the floor of Utah (10th in the West). Atlanta won 122-132 thanks to Jalen Johnson authoring the greatest match of his career.
The 23-year-old power forward, drafted in 20th position in 2021 by Atlanta, scored 31 points (10/19 on shots, 7/11 on free throws), took 18 rebounds, delivered 14 assists and intercepted 7 balls in 41 minutes. He thus signed his third triple-double, breaking his record for points and assists. Atlanta led most of the time in this part, but Utah, driven by Lauri Markkanen to 40 points (15/25 on shots), still managed to get ahead, for a few points, at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth.
Phoenix takes advantage
However, an 8-0 run allowed the Hawks to get back on track to victory. For the first time in the history of the franchise (based in Atlanta since 1968), the Hawks scored 15 3-point baskets in the first half. Frenchman Zaccharie Risacher contributed to this success, with 11 points in 19 minutes. On Sunday, Atlanta will travel to Phoenix, which made short work of Indiana, the reigning vice-champion but whose team no longer resembles the one that shone six months ago (Haliburton, Toppin and Mathurin injured, Turner gone). The Suns won 133-98 by widening the gap from the 10th minute, to bring it to +46 in the last quarter.
Toronto surprises
Devin Booker and Dillon Brooks, authors of 33 and 32 points, had a blast in the Pacers defense. Phoenix is 7th in the West and Indiana 14th in the East. Much higher in the Eastern Conference, Toronto (6th) created a little surprise by winning against Cleveland (4th) with a score of 113-126. Trailing by ten points in the first quarter, the Raptors immediately reacted and then continued to race in the lead. The trio Scottie Barnes (28pts) – Immanuel Quickley (25pts) – Jakob Poeltl (20pts) excelled against the Cavs who were mainly able to count on Donovan Mitchell (31pts at 7/18 on shots).
