Ryder Cup, the comeback in Spain

The organizers of the Ryder Cup announced that the 2031 edition of the prestigious golf competition would take place for the second time in Spain, near Barcelona.

In 1997, Spain was the first country outside the United Kingdom to welcome the Ryder Cup, the prestigious competition between the best American golfers to the best Europeans every two years. Since then, Ireland (2006), France (2018) and Italy (2023) have also had this chance, but Spain will be entitled to a second ration of Ryder Cup, in six years, as announced by the organizers on Tuesday.

If the 1997 edition had taken place in Andalusia, that of 2031 will take place in Camiral, not far from Girona, north of Barcelona. Spain, which is the second European country behind England to have counted the most players in Ryder Cup, is thus rewarded. There has always been a Spaniard in the European team since 1979, but if the current best Spaniard, Jon Rahm, is only 66th world player this week.

“The Ryder Cup has experienced significant growth since its last reception in Spain in 1997. It is one of the most important sporting events in the world, which brings considerable economic advantages and world visibility to a region and a host country. We could therefore not be happier to organize it for the first time on the Costa Brava and in Barcelona, and for the second time in Spain, welcomed Guy Kinnings, Managing Director of the European Tour Group.

Do you go to New York in September

“The reception of the Ryder Cup is the realization of a long -standing dream: to host the biggest golf sporting event in Catalonia and Spain. For the municipalities of Girona, Costa Brava and Barcelona, this will create immediate economic benefits, stimulating high value golf and leisure tourism in the years preceding the Ryder Cup 2031, and a lasting heritage built on the reputation of hosting one of the largest sporting events in the world. We would like to thank the Catalan and Spanish governments as well as the Spanish Golf Federation for their support and we are delighted to continue our excellent relationship with Ryder Cup Europe “, have welcomed the owners of the truck course.

Recall that this year (September 25-28), the Ryder Cup will take place in New York, then the following editions in Ireland (2027), in Minnesota (2029), in San Francisco (2033) and in Maryland (2037). Europe, which won the last edition, has won 15 Ryder Cup since the beginnings in 1927, against 27 for the United States.
