Julia Scheib was able to be strong enough during the second round to win the giant slalom in Semmering ahead of Camille Rast and Sara Hector. Clara Direz could not do better than 17th place.
Julia Scheib confirms the adage “never two without three”. After winning the opening giant slalom in Sölden then the one organized in Mont Tremblant at the beginning of December, the Austrian was a prophet in her country on the Semmering trail. It must be said that it was able to be sufficiently consistent on snow made complicated by the rising temperatures over the passages during the second route. Which may explain why Nina Astner, first to pass the starting gate, kept the best time of the round to move up from 30th to 12th place in the end. For the victory, Camille Rast struck first by settling into the “hot seat” thanks to the second time on this second run alone.
Rast put the pressure on
While Thea Louise Stjernesund did not manage to end the day well, falling to ninth position, Lara Colturi experienced her second consecutive retirement after that suffered in the first round of the Courchevel slalom. Unexpectedly, the Albanian went off the track shortly before passing the second intermediate. It was then time to hit the track for Julia Scheib. Not very comfortable in the central part of this second round, the Austrian was able to take advantage of the last part of the course which was less applied by Camille Rast to take first place
for fourteen hundredths of a second. Starting with a tiny margin over Julia Scheib, Sara Hector had no room for error. If she was on par with her opponent in the first half of the course, she lost in the final.
Scheib did not break down
Conceding four tenths of a second to the Austrian, the reigning Olympic champion in the discipline must be content with the third step of the podium.. The only Tricolor at the start, Clara Direz did not seize her chance. With the 26th and penultimate time of the round, the native of Sallanches could not do better than 17th place during this giant slalom in Semmering. With this victory and zero points from Alice Robinson, who made a mistake during the first round, Julia Scheib takes back the red bib as leader of the giant slalom World Cup with 88 points ahead of the New Zealander. Sixth this Saturday in Austria, Mikaela Shiffrin consolidates her first place in the general classification with Alice Robinson who is now 114 points behind the American before the slalom scheduled for this Sunday in the Austrian resort.
