With her teddy bear held tightly in her arms, she looks like a real little girl. Features and body with all physical attributes. This doll was presented as a sex toy on sale for nearly 187 euros on the Shein e-commerce site. It was the crackdown on fraud that raised the alarm. “Their description and categorization on the site makes it difficult to doubt the child pornography nature of the content.“, indicates the Directorate General for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Repression (DGCCRF).

In the streets of Paris on the morning of Sunday, November 2, the French people we met were stunned. “It’s shameful. I don’t really know any words. We know what that evokes. Especially for people who think about this kind of thing. It’s horrible” a passerby remarked in dismay.

The Chinese giant has removed this doll from sale on its site and is calling it a major failure. “We are taking immediate corrective measures and strengthening our internal systems to prevent such a situation from recurring“, assures Quentin Ruffat, spokesperson for Shein.

A scandal that comes at a bad time three days before the opening of a dog store inside the BHV. There are posters everywhere to promote it. The Chinese giant will also be hosted in five Lafayette galleries in the provinces. A way for him to improve his image, which was a failure according to this Parisian: “Such a thing is authorized on their site and what’s more, we host a site like that at BHV, I find that really unacceptable“.

Coveted for their low price, one in three French people have already purchased Shein clothing in the last six months. After being singled out for its poor working conditions and its environmental impact, the Chinese giant’s quest for legitimacy is once again in turmoil.
