On the occasion of his qualification for the quarterfinals of the US Open, Novak Djokovic (38 years old) broke several longevity records.
His last two games, against the American SVAJDA and the British Norrie, had concluded in four sets. But faced with the German qualified Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 16 of the US Open, Novak Djokovic left crumbs to his opponent, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 in 1h50. It is still too early to speak of possible 25th Grand Chelem victory, so much the last adults proved that he had trouble in front of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz (five eliminations in two years), but the fact that the 38-year-old Serbian player continues to write his legend.
Thus, by winning against Struff, he reached the quarter -finals of the four Grands Chelem of the year for the ninth time (after 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2021 and 2023). Roger Federer co-detected the record, but Djokovic is now alone (no woman, however, has succeeded in this feat). The Serbian also broke his own record for the oldest player to reach all the big -like quarter -finals the same season, at 38 years and 108 days (his previous record dated from 2023, and Serena Williams, at 34 and 350 days in 2016, follows him in the standings).
Djokovic Big favorite against Fritz
With this victory, Novak Djokovic also improves his own record of 64 qualifications in the quarter -finals in the Grand Slam (in front of the 58 of Roger Federer), for 80 adults played! It had been 34 years that an elderly player had not joined the quarter -finals at the US Open. It was at the time of Jimmy Connors, semi-finalist, who had celebrated his 39 years during the tournament. On the other hand, it is only up to 2021 to see a player so elderly in quarter in Grand Slam, in this case Roger Federer in Wimbledon.
And Novak Djokovic could still beat more records, because if it has the figures, he will be the immense favorite of his quarter -final. The Serbian will be opposed to Taylor Fritz, which he has already beaten ten times out of ten, including five times on outdoor hard. The American is the fifth player to have the worst series against Djokovic, after Andreas Seppi (12-0), Milos Raonic (12-0), Jérémy Chardy (14-0), and of course Gaël Monfils and his incredible assessment of 0 victory in 20 confrontations.
