The vagueness surrounding humanitarian aid to Gaza, insufficient and still considered as an adjustment variable by the Israeli authorities despite the fragile ceasefire concluded on October 10, is gradually being lifted: a new framework is being established, under the influence of Washington. It promises to be a break with the practices that have prevailed since the start of the war in Gaza, launched in retaliation for the bloody attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, and especially with the humanitarian aid system in place for decades in the enclave.
Friday October 24, Marco Rubio, the American Secretary of State, visited the civil-military coordination center opened by the United States in southern Israel. Washington, he said, is “ready to work” with certain United Nations agencies, but not with UNRWA, responsible for Palestinian refugees, which has played a crucial role for decades in Gaza. Mr. Rubio claimed that the latter was “became a Hamas subsidiary”taking up the Israeli argument, however undermined by UN investigations.
