Consolidation in the large distribution sector continues in France. The Carrefour distribution giant is authorized to buy the CORA and Match stores, previously held by the Louis Delhaize group, the competition authority announced Thursday, March 13.

The body, in particular responsible for ensuring that competition between distributors is not too low at the local level, “considered that the operation was not likely to significantly strengthen the power of the Carrefour purchase (…), given the small share of purchase represented by the old stores of the Louis Delhaize group in France”. The acquisition had been announced by the Carrefour group in July 2023, but was to obtain the approval of the competition gendarme.

Authority still posed certain conditions for this acquisition. She claims in particular “May seven stores be sold to competing brands”she details in a press release. She also asks “That a franchise contract is terminated for the benefit of a competing brand, so that consumers can benefit from sufficient alternatives to play competition for their purchases of consumer products”.
