From January 1, 2026, EDF employees will no longer be able to drink alcohol as part of their work. Management justifies this unprecedented measure by public health issues.

A cup to celebrate the signing of a big contract or the retirement of a colleague. In France, the tradition is that even within the company, we toast with alcohol. But in recent years, mentalities have evolved and sometimes in the office, things are less sparkling. “I am a former RER A driver at RATP, so for us, it was simple: zero alcohol. That’s it,” explains a passerby. “If there are meals at the end of the year or that sort of thing, because we’re in that period, why not a drink, but certainly not too much,” says another.
After Vinci and Bouygues Construction, it is EDF’s turn to switch to a dry regime. Already banned on these industrial sites, from January 1, alcohol will be banned from offices and seminars. Also gone are the beer and wine offered by the boss during business trips.
“I think it’s not bad to separate alcohol and work because that way it avoids any excesses.” believes another passerby. In the event of an accident caused by a drunk employee or inappropriate behavior towards colleagues, the employer can be held responsible.
Today, human resources departments advocate sobriety. “I think that the HR manager needs to protect himself because we ask him for a lot of things, he has a lot of responsibilities and if he can actually avoid problems, I think it’s rather a good thing that he protects himself and that he preserves the company in which he works and then the image too because if we hear about scandals in this or that company, it can go a long way,” declares Marjorie Dumont-Crisolago. To still keep a little conviviality, some Internet users have found the solution: sweets and fruit juices. The starting drink like a snack between colleagues.
