The French State invests in the French Satellite Operator Eutelsat, learned Thursday, June 19 France Inter with the person concerned and the Elysée. France will invest 500 million euros via the State Participation Agency. Other players, including private sector, will also invest in the company up to 800 million euros, including CMA-CGM.

The investment is announced on Thursday but will only be effective in the fall. With this announced investment, the French State doubles the share it holds in Eutelsat (currently 13.6%) and thus goes to 29%, becoming – if things do not evolve by fall – the first shareholder of the company.

The purpose of this investment is to stimulate a dynamic to create the European Satellite Communications Champion, in a context where French and European sovereignty in the satellite market is essential. The State also seeks to assert an autonomy strategy in the space sector, in particular compared to the American company Starlink.

The State finally seeks to send a message to other European players in the sector, including Germany and Great Britain so that they also invest in Eutelsat.
