The Hauts-de-France, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region and Normandy drew out of the game in July from the tourism point of view, with an increase in the attendance of hotels compared to 2023, according to the first trends communicated Friday August 1 in France Inter by the France Tourism Alliance, which brings together the largest players in the sector.

On the other hand, New Aquitaine and Brittany welcomed fewer tourists compared to two years ago due to the smaller budget of the French, according to the analysis of professionals in the sector. The year 2023 serves as a reference to analyze the evolution of tourism because 2024 was a special year due to the reception of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in France.

In detail, Hauts-de-France recorded the highest increase in the number of nights between July 1 and 27, with an increase in attendance of 23.7% in the hotels in the region compared to 2023. “It is a very very beautiful evolution, which is due to the big departure of the Tour de France”Analysis Véronique Siegel, president of the UMIH (Union of Hotel Trades and Industries). According to figures from the Alliance France Tourism, the increase in attendance is thus 70.7% for the Douai-Lens sector compared to 2023, 52% for Lille and 25.9% for Dunkirk, territories that welcomed runners and spectators during the first three stages of the large loop.

The PACA region, with 17.9% increase, and Normandy, with 9.1% increase also attracted tourists, particularly foreigners. “Nice airport drains a strong international clientele, so high -end hotels make very good results on PACA”, explains Véronique Siegel. Normandy is also “pulled up by high -end establishments in Deauville, Trouville, etc.”. The Grand-Est also recorded a slight increase in the attendance of hotels (5.2%), as are the Pays de la Loire (4.4%), Ile-de-France (2.8%), the Center-Val de Loire region (1.2%), Burgundy-Franche Comté (0.7%), Occitania (0.2%) and Auvergne-Rhône Alpes (0.1%).

On the other hand, two regions more popular with French tourists record a slight drop in attendance: -3% in New Aquitaine, -0.3% in Brittany. Increasingly limited holiday budgets are one of the causes explaining this trend, according to Stéphane Villain, president of Tourism DNA, the Federation of Institutional Tourism actors: “The expenditure usually for a Frenchman is around 60 euros per day and per person, there we are rather around 55 euros.“French tourists also stay less, ten days on average, according to Stéphane Villain, against 15 days five years ago.
