On a Thouars market (Deux-Sèvres), it is one of the most popular products. Tasty, sweet, juicy, the melon is in all the baskets. “It’s fresh, it’s user -friendly, you can have it as an aperitif, for dessert”illustrates a consumer. On the land of production, sales explode: +20 to 30% compared to last year. This year, the melon harvest has taken ahead. The heat caused by the heat wave made them ripen faster, because the sun accentuates their growth.
An observation made by Julien Gaudet, manager of the exploitation the priory of the Dive, in his field in Maine-et-Loire. Harvesting is done earlier than expected. “The plots that we had to harvest on June 25, we started to pick them up on June 15. And there, we are in the process of collecting the plots which are rather planned between July 10 and 14. The whole of our production is between a week and ten days ahead”, said the professional.
