Did Halloween have an effect on the 2026 budget review? This is what the Minister of the Economy, Roland Lescure, suggests in an interview with Tribune Sunday from November 2. “This week measures were voted on, perhaps linked to the prospect of Halloween, which were totally ineffective!”he noted, citing a tax on multinational profits “inapplicable”. He sees “tax witchcraft”. Since the start of examination of the 2026 draft budget in the National Assembly, deputies have adopted a series of measures aimed in particular at taxing businesses more.
Pleading once again for “a budget of commitments” which reflects “a balance between budgetary seriousness and political stability”Roland Lescure, however, warned: “Not everything is acceptable.” “We can decide in theory to export our deficit problem and want to make the whole world pay. But in practice, this is simply not possible. (…) To those who say ‘we are going to have 30 billion euros in magic revenue’, I answer: ‘We will have 30 billion magic problems'”he added.
Concerning the Dutreil pact, a system allowing tax reduction during family business transfers, the Minister of the Economy called for not “selling out French companies”. “The Dutreil pact is an essential tool for preserving French-style family capitalism. It is useful. But can we correct, here or there, the excesses that are noted by some? Let’s look at it! On the other hand, if the result of what will be voted on in the Assembly results in selling out French companies, we would be shooting ourselves in the foot”he declared.
