After the psychodrama of April, a course finally passed. The National Assembly Cultural Affairs Committee approved on Wednesday, June 16, the public audiovisual bill on Wednesday, June 16, deleting in passing, on the proposal of the government, the articles on other subjects. The Minister of Culture Rachida Dati continued to support the examination at the Assembly of this bill of Senator Laurent Lafon (UDI), initially scheduled for May 2024 and many times postponed. She is again registered with the calendar agenda in the hemicycle on June 30 and July 1.
In April, the commission’s debates had been chaotic, disturbed by an incident who opposed Ms. Dati to an assembly of the Assembly, then considerably slowed down by hundreds of amendments from the left. Resumed on Tuesday afternoon, these debates took place without a hitch, until Wednesday morning. The government has adopted amendments to abolish all articles in the second chapter, relating to the “Preservation of our audiovisual sovereignty”.
There remains the first chapter and the heart of the text, the reform of the public audiovisual. The text plans to create a holding company, France Médias, which would oversee France Télévisions, Radio France and the INA (National Audiovisual Institute), under the authority of a Chairman and CEO. If France Médias Monde, international branch of French public audiovisual (RFI, France 24), was initially part of this holding company, it was finally excluded by the commissioners, on the proposal of the government.
