On the side of a road in Brittany, the very first distributor of scallops. You can buy them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Something to satisfy all your desires as the holidays approach. “The shells, yes, it’s the holiday season and I think it’s very good that it’s in distributors”rejoices a customer. “We don’t necessarily have a fishmonger right next door. So it’s very practical”indicates a man. These treasures of the sea are harvested a few kilometers away, in the bay of Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d’Armor), by Damien Guillemin, artisan fisherman.
He sells half of his shells directly from the producer to the consumer, either on his online store or via the vending machine. It is his wife, Élodie Guillemin, who is responsible for preparing the shells. Only the shelled nuts are vacuum-packed. “Sometimes, we take the sailors when there are really a lot of them, but essentially, it’s both of us. The children also get involved on the weekends. It’s nice. We want to please people, so we give our all”explains Élodie Guillemin.
She is still the one who supplies the machine every day. “For the company, that’s a little bit of extra direct sales, so obviously it’s a small profit that we’re adding and we’re happy, because we’re looking to sell directly from the producer to the consumer. We hope that we will simply continue and develop, why not”underlines Élodie Guillemin.
If the success is there, it is also thanks to the competitive price: 10 euros for a 250 gram bag or 20 euros for 500 grams for ultra-fresh scallops.
