Having passed quickly to OM, Luis Suarez is now shining in Portugal and does not have good memories of his stay in Marseille.
Sneaking past Olympique de Marseille, Luis Suarez left only a vague memory on Canebière. Arriving in the summer of 2022 from Granada, the Colombian striker only stayed six months at OM before leaving, without the reasons for this lightning failure being really explained at the time. Today at Sporting Portugal, the player returned directly to this Marseille parenthesis in an interview given to the Portuguese media Record.
With hindsight, Suarez recognizes above all an error in timing: “When I left for Marseille, I wasn’t psychologically ready, so it wasn’t the right choice. » A strong confession, which sheds different light on a passage often summarized as simple bad sports casting.
In Marseille, the striker has never managed to establish himself in the long term, nor to find his place in a demanding context, marked by permanent pressure and the immediate expectation of results. We must nevertheless remember that he managed, through his entries, to score 3 goals in 11 matches, which is far from being the worst ratio of number 9s passed by OM over the last 20 years.
He forgot everything
Ironically, his only specific memories concern the European confrontations against his current club: “ We won both matches against Sporting with OM. I don’t remember what the coach said (Igor Tudor, Editor’s note),
because I erased those moments from my memory », he blurted out, as if to turn the page once and for all.
A failed meeting, which the player now prefers to forget, while Marseille, faithful to its habits, has already moved on. For his part, the Colombian international has been shining since leaving France. Last season, Luis Suarez scored 27 goals in 41 league appearances for Almeria and is already up to 11 goals in 15 appearances in the Portuguese league this season.
