Nothing is lost, everything is transformed. Oil cooking oils and other foods to make durable fuels by gradually moving away from fossil fuels. To do this, Totalenergies reports, in a press release Tuesday, June 17, of an agreement that the group has just made with the Belgian firm Quatra which recovers and refines the oils in question. About 60,000 tonnes of raw materials intended for the production of Biodiesel and the famous SAF, the own fuel for aviation, are called upon to gradually replace the traditional kerosene.

The Belgian company partner of Totalenergies will collect cooking oils, in France and Europe, then ship them, once filtered, to the Bioraffineries of the French multinational for its production of road and air fuels. Totalnergies has already converted two of its traditional oil refineries into biofuels production: its Mède site (Bouches-du-Rhône) six years ago already, the other with Grandpuits (Seine-et-Marne) which will enter service in 2026.

Are we sure that it is not “greenwashing”, eco-bar, on the part of Total? To answer, just look at the means of productions that exist today. The Totalnergies of Mède already manufactures biodiésel for heavy goods vehicles, agricultural or construction machines. The production capacity amounts to 500,000 tonnes of biofuels per year. The Mède must begin to produce sustainable fuels in 2025 specifically intended for planes on airports in the south of France. Regarding largepuits, in Seine-et-Marne, the site will be able to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of this air fuel of this type. It’s concrete.

Producing this type of fuel is an obligation. Some 2% of the fuel volume of devices that take off from European airports must be made up of SAF. This proportion will be 6% in 2030 to reach 70% in 2050. It is an obvious business to prepare today. What Totalnergies does by claiming to be able to produce 500,000 tonnes of SAF from 2028 for the whole of Europe. This will strengthen the sovereignty of the European Union and France in this field in the face of the Chinese capable of supplying us massively on this future market.
