The sex dolls that worry opponents of the Chinese brand are not the only reason for indignation over the installation of the Chinese giant Shein in French BHV stores. Minorities oppressed by Beijing are also speaking out to protest against the brand’s supposed production methods and the ecological cost of its practices. Videos are circulating on social networks and warning about the establishment of Shein in France.
The means are modest, in front of the camera, young girls of Tibetan origin are offended by the arrival of Shein in Paris at the BHV premises. They are members of VTAG, the Tibet Volunteer Advocacy Group fighting against China’s occupation of their country. Activists are particularly attacking the environmental damage linked to fast fashion, disposable fashion which pollutes and does not respect the planet.
The mobilization also comes from the Uighurs who see in each item of clothing sold by the brand, forced labor in China from their community, despite the brand’s assurance of meeting European standards. “Shein is necessarily involved in the forced labor of Uighurs. The Uighur genocide is in fact a genocide of capitalism which links itself with a totalitarian state, which subjects a population to its service. At Shein, they can lie as they breathe, it is their nature. In any case, it is a huge shame”accuses Dilnur Réhan, the president of the Uighur Institute of Europe.
Beyond the challenges concerning respect for human rights, respect for the environment or even compliance with safety standards, Shein is also singled out for its commercial practices. The textile sector that 4.6 billion small packages arrive from Asia and China in Europe and thus escape any customs duties.
