Luka Doncic’s Lakers (35pts) narrowly beat Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs (19pts) with a score of 118-116. For its part, Oklahoma City suffered its first defeat of the season, on the Portland floor (121-119).
It was one of the posters of the evening. The Los Angeles Lakers challenged the San Antonio Spurs at the Crypto.com Arena, in a match between two teams having a good start to the season. And it was the Californians who won, with a score of 118-116. A small hold-up on the part of Luka Doncic (35pts, 13rbds) and his men, because the Texans led for most of the match, and still had a lead of twelve points at the end of the third quarter.
At 2’48 from the end, after two free throws from Victor Wembanyama, who will finish this match with 19 points (5/14 on shots, 9/11 on free throws) and 8 rebounds (he came out for his 6th foul at 1’39 from the buzzer), San Antonio still led 110-112. But a 3-pointer from Doncic gave the Lakers the lead again for the first time since midway through the third quarter. Then the Californians sealed their victory with free throws, Julian Champagnie missing his at the last second, when he could send the two teams into overtime. The Lakers are now second and the Spurs fifth.
First defeat for OKC
The leader of the Western Conference is still champion Oklahoma City, but the Thunder suffered their first defeat of the season! On the Portland floor, OKC, which had rested Chet Holmgren, Lu Dort and Alex Caruso, lost 121-119, after leading for three and a half quarters. Carried by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to 35 points and 9 rebounds, the Thunder had a 22-point lead at the start of the second quarter, and still led 103-104 with 4’54 remaining. But he conceded an 8-0 and the Blazers of Deni Avdija (26pts, 10rbds, 9pds) managed to maintain their advantage until the end. OKC has therefore fallen, the question of the duration of its invincibility at the start of the season will no longer arise. Next opponent: Sacramento.
First victory for Brooklyn
Among the other results of the night, we note the first victory of the season for Brooklyn, who won 103-112 against vice-champion Indiana, who now has the same (sad) record of success in eight games. Much higher in the rankings, New York scored a nice 137-114 victory against Minnesota, with 25 points from OG Anunoby, and despite Julius Randle’s 32 points, in great form against his former team. With 15 points, 5/13 on shots, Anthony Edwards, however, did not weigh on the match. Denver, for its part, won 122-112 against Miami, with a Nikola Jokic in a triple-double (33pts, 15rbds, 16ft). Finally, in a bottom-of-the-table match in the West, New Orleans won its second victory in a row, against Dallas (99-101), which is not going strong at the start of the season despite the presence of draft number 1 Cooper Flagg (20pts at 8/19 on shots, 9rbds).
