At the initiative of the United States of Donald Trump, the UN Security Council provided, on Friday October 31, 2025, its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara which it considers to be the solution ” the most feasible » for the disputed territory, despite opposition from Algeria.
The resolution adopted by 11 votes for, none against and 3 abstentions – Algeria having refused to participate in the vote – considers that the 2007 Rabat plan, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, ” could represent the most feasible solution » and therefore be « the base » future negotiations to resolve this fifty-year-old conflict.
This decision comes in the context of the long-standing conflict around Western Sahara, a disputed territory since Spain’s withdrawal in 1975. The Moroccan plan of 2007, providing for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, remains one of the main avenues envisaged to resolve this conflict, without a clear international consensus having emerged.
