It will have barely took an hour to reach a handshake. European products will now be taxed definitively at 15 % on American soil. But several sectors will be exempt, such as aeronautics, chemistry and agricultural products. Since April 2025, the surcharge applied by the American president, Donald Trump, were already very high. For Europe, this deal engraved in marble in Scotland, Sunday July 27, will above all make it possible not to live at the expense of the reversals of Washington.
“This is a great agreement. It will bring us stability and predictability, which is very important for our business on both sides of the Atlantic”assured Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, facing the press alongside the US head of state on Sunday.
The interest in Europe was to limit the breakage, because without agreement on August 1, Donald Trump would have set customs duties to 30 %. A victory for the United States relativized by an economist: “It is also a ball in the foot that Donald Trump is pulled, since we know that it will have an impact both on European production, but also on American production”She explains to France Télévisions. The European Union and the Member States must now validate this text before its entry into force.
