Working in contact with dust, for how much longer? This is the question posed by Manuel Da Silva, marble worker. Born in 1968, he would have had to work until age 64 without the suspension of the pension reform. Today he could leave early. “It will be beneficial, that’s for sure. Because the work is hard and we have a job that is quite difficult, which is very physical. It’s good news to be able to leave, even if it’s only a few months early to retire.” he confides.
Suspending the reform would limit the retirement age to 62 years and 9 months until January 2028. The big winners would be the generations born between 1964 and 1965, who would be guaranteed to leave earlier than expected. Same thing for those born between 1966 and 1968, if nothing changes in the 2027 presidential election.
In total, 3.5 million French people are potentially affected, but opinion remains divided. “France cannot take money like that. There will need to be real pension reform whether they like it or not,” explains a passerby. For another, the reform must be suspended: “The extension of pensions must be suspended, it will be good for difficult professions.”
This measure will come into force next January. According to the government, it will cost 400 million euros in 2026 and 1.8 billion euros in 2027.
