When a firm ticket distributor always has very concrete consequences for the inhabitants of a small town. “We will have to take the car right away. So make 35 km round trip to do what we did before on site”testifies a resident. “There is nothing, it’s dead. There is nothing at all in the region”deplore a woman in turn.

In France, the number of distributors fell by 3.5 % last year, going from just over 44,000 in 2023, to 42,578 in 2024. In comparison, there were 15,000 more 10 years ago. First explanation: the resurgence of payments by card or connected object, a dematerialization which should also cause the reduction in the number of agencies in the coming years.

“Today, you have certain banking agencies which, ultimately, do not even see their customers once a year. The reality is that everything happens in a dematerialized manner. By 2030, you have objectives which can be reduced by 15 to 20 % of the number of banking agencies, in the space of 5 years”explains Christopher Dembik, economist. In 2024, the proportion of cash payments was for the first time under the 50 %mark.
