Why did the price of chocolate increase so much?

Star of the shelves at Easter, chocolate is acclaimed by 97% of consumers interviewed. But its price jumped 14% in a year. How to explain such an increase?

Bells, eggs, chickens … Easter is the second highlight of the year for the chocolate market, after Christmas. There are 331 million euros in sales at Easter 2023. An opportunity for which the French spend an average of 24 euros. Because chocolate is among our favorite foods: 97% of respondents say they are eating them. Each year, each household consumes 12.5 kg.

Some 115 companies specialized in manufacturing more than 730,000 tonnes per year. But its price has increased sharply, by an additional 14% over a year. And for good reason, more and more people consume it. The demand is exponential in Asia and the Middle East, and on the other, production is struggling. In Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana (Africa), the two main producers, the crops were ravaged by the cocoylilla of the cocoa tree and the climatic conditions.
