Why do air and aeronautics companies find it so difficult to recruit?

It is a paradox. Since the end of the health crisis, planes have been full of cracking, control of devices have been increasing. The context is therefore very favorable to employment. However, air and aeronautical companies are struggling to recruit in France. For what ?

To answer this question, academics and business school teachers, attached to the Pegasus pulpit (The only French pulpit dedicated to economics and management of air transport and aerospace), have targeted a specific audience: job seekers and young people under the age of 25. They questioned 1,600, via questionnaires or face-to-face interviews.

THE results Show that companies in the air sector and those of aeronautics are concerned with being done. First, because apart from big names like Air France, Easyjet, Ryanair on the Companies, Airbus and Boeing on the manufacturers or Paris Airport on the Services side, the others go under the radar. Only a third of respondents have heard of the French group Safran, world leader in the construction of aircraft engines, and even less Latécoère, the world’s number one in plane doors.

Even more worrying, not many people spontaneously think of looking for work in this sector and, according to the Pegasus pulpit, it is not because this industry is pointed out for its polluting emissions. Contrary to popular belief, the environmental question is not a fundamental choice criterion for those under 25, according to the study.

76 % of young people do not imagine a career in air and 86 % in aeronautics because a part of them, in particular, is self -censorship analyzes Paul Chiambaretto, the director of the Pégase Chair. They judge that they have not done the right studies, not having the right skills and think that these sectors are open to only scientific profiles.

Finally, half of the young and three quarters of the unemployed perceive companies in this sector as elitist or inaccessible. Among the other brakes, half of the respondents estimates that the professions are too demanding, with stress and offbeat schedules. Professions that they do not necessarily know very well.

To reverse this trend, the Pegasus chair recommends a lot of communication around trades, opportunities, career developments by going to seek young people on social networks and by calling on influencers who have nothing to do with the sector. It also recommends developing rapid retraining routes to meet the recruitment needs.

“France is one of the only countries in the world, with the United States, to have so many global players in air and aeronauticsSourne Paul Callbaretto. When companies and their subcontractors encounter difficulties, this slows down the activity all over the world. “
