Why do students demonstrate in Serbia? Understand in three minutes

Large -scale student demonstrations have been shaking Serbia since November 2024. They follow the collapse of part of the roof of Novi Sad station, in the north of the country, which left 15 dead. The students and the opposition criticize the nationalist president, Aleksandar Vucic, of having established a corrupt system and of having increased its stranglehold on the institutions, and linked this mismanagement to the drama of Novi Sad.

The pressure exerted by this dispute movement on the Serbian government resulted in the resignation of several senior officials, as well as that of the Prime Minister on January 28. To calm the students’ anger, the executive announced measures corresponding to the main claims. However, the demonstrations have not weakened.

In this video, we return to the collapse of the roof of Novi Sad station and examine how this event has become the symbol of the drifts of the power of the Serbian government in the eyes of the demonstrators.
