The announcement will not please owners. The State will proceed with an automatic increase in property tax in 2026. In Lille (North), this Wednesday morning, some residents do not understand. “It’s a bit of a shame to tax people again. People are having difficulty living, we can’t continue to pay taxes”deplores a local resident. Another asks: “Why are we increasing there and not increasing where there is really money to be had, particularly in terms of tax evasion and super-profits and ultra-billionaires?”
This increase would reach 63 euros on average for more than 7 million housing units. The reason? An update of data unchanged since the 1970s to calculate the amount of tax. Concretely, so-called comfort elements such as running water, shower or heating increase the theoretical surface area of the property and will now be considered systematic.
Some owners are not surprised: “We have a big house, we have a lot of equipment that contributes to the comfort of the house. It seems normal to me”says one of them. “Yes, it’s quite fair that as the value of the property increases, taxes also increase”adds a young woman.
Second bathroom, air conditioning… The work carried out must always be declared by the owners, but this automatic revaluation can be contested in the event of disagreement, specifies this real estate agent: “It will be a declaration that will be sent directly to the tax website that you will sign, in agreement or disagreement with what is proposed, as a recalculation of the property tax”says Alban Hennocq, real estate agent.
Today, 32 million people pay property tax in France.
