May 1 is a holiday and unemployed during which the bosses can open, but do not have the right to make their employees work. A bill has been tabled to soften this regulation.

In Fontaine-lès-Dijon (Côte-d’Or), a florist will be open on 1East May, but under special conditions. “I will open on my own and the whole team (…) will be at rest”, explains Gilles Sonnet, florist. According to the Labor Code, the 1East May is a public holiday. The bosses have the right to open, but are prohibited from having employees work. For customers, traders should have a choice.

A bakery decided to stay closed for the 1East May, because the manager believes that it is not profitable. “We are closed on Sunday already, so people are used to ordering the day before”explains Régis Renaud, manager of the Le Petit Mozart bakery. A bill has been tabled in the Senate to soften the opening conditions for the 1East may. It will not be able to apply for the year 2025 and will be studied from June.
