With Donald Trump’s threat to tax French alcohols with 200%, Champagne producers fear losing the United States market.

Ludovic Beaufort, independent winemaker, Champagne Herbert-Beaufort, produces 120,000 bottles per year, including 5,000 sold in the United States. Donald Trump’s threat to establish 200% customs duties on French alcohols is a blow. American customs duties on champagne amount to 2% on Friday, March 14. A bottle is sold for $ 50, or 46 euros. With new customs duties, it would increase to 138 euros. This tax would sign the end of the American market for the winemaker.

In 2024, the Champagne vineyard made record sales in the United States, with nearly 27 million exported bottles. The Taittinger Champagne group hopes that commercial negotiations will take place. Already in 2019, Donald Trump had taxed European wines 25%. Champagne was not concerned, but the French wine sector estimates that it had lost at the time nearly 450 million euros.
