Having moved from Lens to Southampton in the off-season, Will Still sees his English adventure already over.
For personal reasons, and especially his undisguised attraction to English football – he is the 33-year-old Belgian-British technician – Will Still made the decision to leave RC Lens last May. After one season only as part of an initial three-year contract signed with the Sang et Or.
Barely a week after officially announcing his departure from Lens, the person concerned signed for Southampton, in the Championship – the second division of English football. Its mission: to allow the Saints to reconnect with the elite,
the Premier Leagueleft at the end of the 2022-2023 season.
But now, the beautiful story has turned sour. After an encouraging start to the season, Southampton have only managed one success in the last 12 rounds of the championship. So much so that the club is in 21st position in the standings (out of 24 teams). Three lengths from the red zone and already ten units from sixth place, synonymous with the promotion play-offs.
Disembarked after only 16 matches
Flanked by the second squad in the Championship if we are to believe the overall value lent to the Saints by the specialized site Transfermarkt (188.50 million euros for all players combined), the club from the south of the kingdom cannot afford such a disaster given the investments made this summer again.
So the leaders of Southampton took the decision this Sunday to dismiss the former Reims strategist. After only 16 matches managed in all competitions when the person concerned had signed a three-year lease. The Walloon native, until further notice, will be replaced on the bench by reserve coach Tonda Eckert.
